10 Delicious Pancake Toppings You’ve Never Tried Before

You have an amazing stack of pancakes. Now what? Well, you could stick with the basics like butter and syrup. However, you could also think creatively with your pancake toppings to create something unique and decadent.

At The Great American Pancake Co., we have a variety of flavored pancake mixes, too. It’s a chance to get creative as you try cinnamon pancakes, celebration pancakes (they have sprinkles in the mix), gingerbread, peanut butter, and so many more.

Not sure what toppings for pancakes to include in your next batch? We have ten toppings you’re bound to fall in love with.

Marshmallow Crème

If you’re looking for a sweet option, marshmallow crème can be dolloped on top of your pancakes. You can even get creative by making them into sandwiches and smearing a bit in between two pancakes.

Once you have marshmallow crème in place, you can also drizzle chocolate syrup or sprinkle chocolate chips onto your stack. You may also want to layer some graham crackers or crumble graham crackers onto the stack for some s’more pancakes.

Avocado/Guacamole

Avocado can be a healthy addition to your pancakes while providing a much-needed creamy texture. There’s no need to add butter when you have avocado since it can be a healthy fat.

Add a scoop of guacamole if you want to add a bit more flavor. This will add a bit of extra spice with jalapenos, too. If you decide to make your own guacamole, you can control the amount of salt, lime, garlic, tomato, and other additions into the mix to ensure that it gives you the flavor you want for your pancakes.

Caramelized Fruit

While you can always use fresh fruit, caramelized fruit can add a fun and exciting dimension to your pancakes, regardless of what meal you eat them at.

Some options include:

  • Pears
  • Apples
  • Bananas
  • Peaches

The fruit will be softer as it becomes caramelized, so be sure to choose a fruit capable of withstanding the process. The result will be a sweet and tasty treat that can almost turn your pancake into a fruit pie.

Bacon

Crunchy strips of bacon can be a great addition to anything, so why not add it to your pancakes? You can decide whether to layer the strips into your stack, crisscross them at the top, or even crumble the bacon and shower it down over your pancakes.

However you decide, be sure that the bacon is crunchy. If you end up with fatty bacon, the strips will lay limply on the pancakes and likely become chewy when you eat it, too.

Try a few different flavors of bacon, too. Opt for turkey bacon if you want to go with a healthier option or hickory-smoked for a bit of a smokier flavor to your pancakes.

Cheese

Cheese makes a lot of sense if you think of pancakes like bread. And there are all sorts of cheeses that you can pair with your pancakes.

It often comes down to the flavor of pancakes you have made.

Blue cheese (and throw in a few slices of pear to compliment the flavors) can turn your stack of pancakes into a gourmet treat.

Play around with some of your favorite cheeses. You may want cheddar, gruyere, Swiss, and even cream cheese with your pancakes.

Caviar

If you want to splurge, add some caviar to your pancakes. While it’s a bit unusual in the U.S., it’s quite popular in Russia. Something about the salty and sweet can redefine this breakfast food.

Add a dollop of crème fraiche for a more authentic flavor, too.

Fried Chicken

Chicken & Waffles has been a favorite duo in the South for years. Why not add fried chicken to your pancakes, too? We love this combination, especially with some maple syrup drizzled over it.

If you’re going to do this right, be sure to use chicken tenders. And if you make your own, we highly suggest breading them in granola or cornflakes to create a fun and crunchy pancake topping.

Salmon and Pickled Onions

Salmon is commonly added to bagels and other breakfast foods. Now, you can add smoked salmon to your pancake stack. It is packed with omega-3 fatty acids, so it’s delicious and good for you.

The pickled onions help to bring out the flavor of the salmon and ensure that your pancakes have a savory flavor. It can be a perfect way to indulge with pancakes for lunch or dinner.

Fresh Herbs

Fresh herbs can be sprinkled on top of your pancakes or even mixed into your butter for something fun and simple.

Basil is one of our favorites, and you may even want to make a Caprese pancake with some cherry tomatoes and mozzarella added on top for good measure.

Other herbs to consider include tarragon, parsley, and chives.

Mushrooms & Spinach

Mushrooms and spinach are a classic combination commonly added to omelets and even crepes. You can sauté them together and stack them on a pancake, too. If you want to get more creative, roll them into a pancake as an oversized crepe.

Think Outside the Box

Whether you want to go sweet, savory, or just plain crazy, there are plenty of pancake toppings to explore. The reality is that once you have a delicious pancake mix, you can serve these up for any meal of the day. Try one topping for breakfast, another for dinner, and yet another for dessert.
